The decorated palace at dusk

Long ago, a king held a royal festival every year. Once again the time came. The capital and the palace were decorated, and friendly kings were invited too.

The king also invited his guru, a sage, to bless the festival. He welcomed him with honour, offered gold coins at his feet and gave him a guest house to stay in.

A dancer in a lamp-lit pillared hall, with a tabla player beside her

That night there was dance and music in the palace. The guests were spellbound by the dancer and showered her with money.

But no one noticed the tabla player, though he kept a beautiful rhythm. No one threw a single coin his way.

By the third watch of the night, he had lost heart. His hands grew slack, and the rhythm began to slip.

The dancer sensed that the whole performance could fall apart, and the king might well be angry.

Still singing, she nodded towards the drummer and sang this couplet:

Much has passed, little remains, and that little too will pass. Do not break your character; it leaves a stain on your life.

Bahut gaī thoṛī rahī, thoṛī bhī ab jāe. Charitra bhaṅg na kījiyo, jīvan dāg lagāy.

Most of the time has gone and what is left will pass too. Don't do anything that stains your life.
Gold coins, a diamond ring and a pearl necklace on a brass plate

The drummer pulled himself together. So much of the night had passed; he could manage a little more. He found the rhythm again.

Then something strange happened. The sage laid all the gold coins the king had given him before the dancer.

Then the prince rose and slipped his diamond ring onto her finger. After him, the princess placed her pearl necklace around the dancer's neck.

Seeing this, the king flew into a rage.

राजाThe king

Stop this song and dance! Do you mean to carry off the whole treasury?

The music stopped and a hush fell over the hall. Everyone wondered what would happen now.

One line, three answers

The king asked each of them: why did you give it?

राजाThe king

Gurudev, I gave you those coins for your comfort. Why did you give every one of them to this dancer?

The sage

Rajan, she has taught me a great lesson. Only a little of my life is left, and it belongs to devotion. This is my hour of meditation, yet I was spending it on song and dance. She opened my eyes.

राजाThe king

Son, why did you give her such a precious ring?

The prince

Father, I am ashamed even to say it. I kept thinking you had grown old yet would not let go of the throne. Tonight I had made up my mind to kill you and take the crown.

But her words made me stop and think: how many more years does Father have? The little that remains will pass too. She saved me from a terrible deed.

राजाThe king

My daughter, why did you give her your pearl necklace?

The princess

Father, I am growing older, but you are so busy with the kingdom that you never think of my marriage. In despair, I had planned to run away tonight with the palace guard to a far-off land.

Her words made me think: I have waited so long, I can wait a little more. Why do something that would stain my name and shame our family?

A wedding gathering under a canopy hung with marigold garlands

Hearing all this, the king's eyes were opened.

राजाThe king

Forgive me, my daughter. Many princes are here tonight. Whomever you choose, I will have you married to him right now, with full celebration.

The princess chose a prince, and with the exchange of garlands they were married before the sage.

A lone traveller on a path of light through a dense forest
राजाThe king

Son, today my eyes are open. Little of my life remains. From today you are king. I will live with my guru in his hermitage and give the rest of my life to meditation and prayer.

The king bade his guests and the artists farewell with honour, and thanked the dancer. Then he took off his royal robes, put on simple clothes, and set out for the forest with his guru.

What the story tells us

'Much has passed, little remains' is for the moments when patience starts to crack. What feels hardest is often very close to the finish.

One moment of impatience can stain years of effort and a good name. And everyone's time is limited, so give what remains to what matters most.

Think about it

What are you close to giving up on, just before the finish? Could you hold on a little longer?
