A nest in a ripe wheat field, with two chicks and the mother bird beside it

In a village there was a large wheat field. A little bird had built her nest in it, and there her two chicks lived.

The days went by, and the wheat turned ripe and golden. It was time for the harvest.

Day one

One day, while their mother was out looking for food, the chicks heard the farmer say:

किसानThe farmer

The crop is ready. Tomorrow I'll ask the neighbours to come and help with the harvest.

The chicks were terrified. As soon as their mother returned, they told her everything.

The mother bird

Don't be afraid, my little ones. I don't think anything will happen tomorrow.

Day two

The next day came and went, and not one neighbour turned up. The farmer grumbled:

किसानThe farmer

Fine. Tomorrow I'll call my relatives. They will surely come.

The chicks panicked again, but their mother stayed calm.

Day three

The relatives did not come either, and the wheat stood uncut. At last the farmer made up his mind:

किसानThe farmer

Enough waiting. Tomorrow morning, I will start the harvest myself.

This time the chicks saw that their mother looked worried. Puzzled, they asked:

The chicks

Mother, you weren't afraid before. Why now?

The mother bird

As long as a job depends on others, it keeps getting put off. But when someone decides to do it himself, it is sure to get done.

So we must leave this very night.

The mother bird and her two chicks flying past a full moon

That very night, by the light of the moon, the bird and her chicks flew away to a new, safe home.

At dawn, the farmer cuts the wheat with a sickle; an empty nest lies nearby

At dawn the farmer came to the field with his sickle and began to cut the wheat. He found the nest empty; the bird's family was already gone.

By evening the whole field was cut. Work that had waited two days for others was finished in one day of his own effort.

Who was the work waiting on?

No one came
No one came
Harvest done in a day

Left to others, the work waited. Taken on himself, it got done.

More than two thousand years ago, the Roman poet Ennius summed up this fable in one line:

Ask not of friends what you yourself can do.

What the story tells us

When we leave our work to others, it keeps getting put off. When we accept it as our own responsibility, the way forward appears.

Asking for help is not wrong; but the responsibility for our own work is ours.

Think about it

Which task are you putting off, hoping someone else will do it? Could you start it yourself today?
