An elephant clearing the field, pushing over a tree

Before the Mahabharata war, the field of Kurukshetra was being cleared for huge armies, chariots and horses. Elephants were uprooting trees to level the ground.

On one such tree was a sparrow's nest with her four little ones. The tree fell and the nest hit the ground, yet, by a miracle, the chicks were unharmed.

The chicks were too young to fly. Then the sparrow saw Krishna surveying the field with Arjuna from a chariot. Beating her tiny wings with all her might, she reached them.

A fallen nest on the ground with four unharmed chicks, the mother sparrow beside it
The mother sparrow

O Krishna, please save my children. Tomorrow the battle begins, and they will be crushed.

Krishna

I hear you. But I cannot interfere with the law of nature.

The mother sparrow

All I know is that you are my protector. I place my children's fate in your hands.

Krishna

The wheel of time stops for no one.

The mother sparrow

I do not know your philosophy, Lord. You are the wheel of time; that is all I know. I take refuge in you.

Krishna

Then store three weeks of food in your nest.

Arjuna, unaware of the conversation, tried to shoo the bird away. But Krishna smiled at her. The sparrow fluttered her wings in thanks and flew off to gather food.

A war elephant in a red cloth; an arrow strikes the bell at its neck and sparks fly

Two days later, just before the conches sounded, Krishna asked Arjuna for his bow and arrow. Arjuna was startled: Krishna had vowed not to take up arms in this war.

Arjuna

Command me, Lord. Nothing can withstand my arrows.

Quietly, Krishna took the bow and aimed at an elephant. But the arrow missed and struck the bell on its neck, which broke loose and fell. Seeing such an easy mark missed, Arjuna laughed.

Arjuna

Shall I, Keshava? And why did you shoot at that elephant at all?

Krishna

Because this is the elephant that knocked down the tree with that sparrow's nest. Nothing more needs to be done.

Arjuna

Which sparrow? And the elephant is alive; only its bell fell off!

Krishna

Blow your conch, Arjuna.

Eighteen days

The war raged. Countless lives were lost, and in the end the Pandavas won.

The silent field after the war: a broken wheel, a fallen banner and a bell on the ground

After the war, Krishna took Arjuna across the silent field once more. At one spot he stopped and looked down at a bell on the ground.

Krishna

Arjuna, will you lift this bell and set it aside?

One small bell, on a field so vast? Arjuna looked puzzled.

Krishna

Yes, this one. It is the bell that fell from the elephant I shot at.

A mother sparrow and four young ones flying out from under a heavy bell lying on the ground

Without another question, Arjuna lifted the heavy bell, and his world changed.

One, two, three, four, five: four young birds flew out, then their mother. For eighteen days, this bell had sheltered the whole family. Full of joy, the mother bird circled around Krishna.

Arjuna

Forgive me, Krishna. Seeing you in a human body, acting like an ordinary man, I had forgotten who you truly are.

In the Bhagavad Gita (9.22), Krishna says:

I carry what they lack, and keep safe what they have.

Yoga-kṣhemaṁ vahāmyaham

Those who think of me with undivided devotion: I provide what they lack and protect what they have.

What the story tells us

The sparrow's faith was not idle. She flew with all her strength, asked for help, and did what she was told: she stored three weeks of food. Then she trusted.

Give your full effort, then trust the outcome. Help often comes in a form we cannot see, like that bell. And, as with Arjuna, pride in our own skill can keep us from seeing the bigger picture.

Think about it

Where have you already given your full effort, so that now it is time to trust?
