Once, in a village, a sage was leading a satsang, a gathering for spiritual talk. Just then a thief wandered in from somewhere and sat down among the listeners.

The sage's words moved him so deeply that the thief began to loathe his own misdeeds. When the satsang ended, he went to the sage and asked how he could atone for his sins.

The sage simply said:

The sage

Go and bathe in the Ganga. Your sins will be washed away.

Steps leading down to the Ganga at dusk

So the thief set off for the Ganga. But then a young man in the gathering stood up and said:

A young man

Mahatmaji! You say bathing in the Ganga washes sins away. Then the sins must sink into the Ganga, which means the Ganga herself becomes sinful.

The sage meditating among the mountains

The sage had no answer. He had never once wondered where the sins go after the Ganga takes them.

Determined to answer this unusual question, he began a tapasya, a long practice of meditation and penance.

A deity appearing in a burst of light

After many days of tapasya, a deity, pleased with him, appeared and offered him a boon.

The sage

Lord, I want only the answer to one question: where does a sin washed in the Ganga go?

The deity, absorbed in his own world, did not know either where a sin washed in the Ganga goes! So he said:

देवताThe deity

Come! Let us ask the Ganga herself.

And so the two of them went to the Ganga.

The journey of a question

Everyone they asked had passed the sin along.

Mother Ganga

The sage

O Mother Ganga, keeper of cool and most sacred waters! Please tell us: countless people wash their sins in you. Do those sins make you sinful too?

The Ganga answered cheerfully:

Mother Ganga

Why would I be sinful? I give all my water, sins and all, to the Ocean. What the Ocean does with those sins after that, ask him.

The Ocean

The deity took the sage to the Ocean and said:

देवताThe deity

O Lord of the Waters! Mother Ganga offers you all her water, and the sins along with it. Do they make you sinful?

The Ocean

With the heat of the sun, I turn all my water into vapour, and it becomes clouds. So why would I be sinful?

Vapour rising from the sea into the clouds

The Clouds

Next the deity took the sage to the clouds, and the sage asked his question once more:

The sage

O Clouds! The Ocean turns its water, sins and all, into vapour, and that becomes you. Do those sins make you sinful?

The Clouds

Brother, why would we be sinful? Season by season, we send all that water down to the Earth. Ask the Earth what she does with the sins.

Mother Earth

So the deity took the sage to the Earth and said:

देवताThe deity

O Mother Earth, who holds up the whole world! The clouds rain sins down with their drops, and those sins soak into you. Do they make you sinful?

Mother Earth

Why would I be sinful? Through the soil, I pass those sins into the grain. Go and ask the Grain what it does with them.

The god of grain

Now the two of them went to the god of grain and asked:

The sage and the deity

O god of grain! The Earth sends all the sins to you. Have you become sinful?

The god of grain

Why would I be sinful? People grow me, or earn me, in a certain state of mind and with a certain intent. And I am cooked and served in a certain state of mind, with a certain intent.

In keeping with that very state of mind and intent, I carry the sins to the people who eat me.

The god of grain

Eating me, their minds turn just as sinful, and that mind drives them to the very deeds whose fruits they must then reap.

Perhaps that is why it is said:

As is the food you eat, so becomes your mind.

Jaisā khāy ann, vaisā hoy man

What the story tells us

How true this story is does not matter. What matters is the important truth it reveals.

To wash one's sins in the Ganga really means to free the mind of wrongdoing. If the mind still holds sin and impurity, the sin we wash away in the Ganga will come back to us, through our food.

Because the intent with which food is earned and cooked shapes the character of those who eat it.
