Lord Vishnu once rode on Garuda to Mount Kailash to visit Lord Shiva. Garuda is a mighty divine being, half man and half eagle.
Vishnu went inside, and Garuda waited outside. Kailash was breathtaking, and a tiny, playful bird hopping about made it lovelier still.
Then came a roar like an approaching storm. Yamraj, the lord of death, arrived on his buffalo.
As he got down, Yamraj's eyes fell on the little bird. He looked at it with a slight frown, then turned and went inside.
Garuda saw that the little bird was trembling with fear.
Little one, why are you so frightened?
Yamraj has set his eyes on me. Now my death is certain.
Garuda took pity on her. He lifted the bird gently in his claws and, in moments, flew miles away from Kailash.
Landing in a dense forest, he set the bird down gently.
You are safe now. Yamraj's eyes cannot reach you here.
Having comforted the bird, Garuda flew back. For so mighty a bird, the distance was nothing.
After a while Yamraj came out. His eyes searched for the little bird.
With a touch of pride, Garuda said:
That bird was frightened when she saw you. So I took her far away from here and left her in a dense forest.
Hearing this, Yamraj began to smile. Puzzled, Garuda asked him why.
That bird's life was complete. In a few moments, in a dense forest miles from here, she was to be eaten by a snake.
I was wondering how a bird with such tiny wings would ever get that far. But you helped her.
Garuda was filled with regret. But it was too late.
In the Bhagavad Gita (2.27), Krishna says:
For one who is born, death is certain.
Jātasya hi dhruvo mṛtyuḥ
What the story tells us
Garuda helped out of kindness, with all his heart. Still, what was meant to happen happened, and his own flight became the way it came about.
Not every outcome is in our hands. What is in our hands is our own action: kindness, help, honest effort. So do good, but without the pride of 'I saved the day', and without blaming yourself for what could not be changed.
Think about it
Which worry weighs on you because its outcome isn't in your hands? What part of it is yours to do?
