Long ago, an unusual king ruled a city. Whenever a holy man came to town, the king summoned him and asked the very same question:

राजाThe king

Who is greater: the householder or the sannyasi?

A householder lives with a family and works in the world. A sannyasi, or monk, gives all of that up for a spiritual life.

If a holy man answered that the householder was greater, the king would say:

राजाThe king

Then why did you become a monk? Go on, become a householder!

If he answered that the sannyasi was greater, the king demanded proof. Whoever could not give it had to become a householder too. One after another, many holy men lost their vows this way.

A king on his throne in a pillared court, with the sage standing before him

One day a wise sage came to the city. The king summoned him too and asked his old question. The sage replied:

The sage

Your Majesty, neither the householder nor the sannyasi is greater. Whoever follows their own dharma, their true duty, is the greater one.

राजाThe king

Very well. Can you prove it?

The sage

Certainly. But for that, you must come with me.

A royal gathering under a striped canopy, where the princess will choose her husband

The swayamvar

The next day, wandering on, the two reached another kingdom. Its princess was choosing her husband at a swayamvar, and kings and princes had come from far and wide.

Her father had no other heir, so whoever she chose would also inherit the whole kingdom.

The princess walked among them with her friends, but liked no one. The whole hall began to lose hope.

A young monk, glowing like the sun

Just then a young monk walked in, his face shining like the sun. The moment the princess saw him, she placed her wedding garland around his neck.

The monk was startled. He took the garland off at once and said:

The young monk

My lady, I am a monk. To think of marrying me is a mistake.

The princess's father

Young man, do you realise that marrying my daughter makes you master of this entire kingdom? Will you still refuse her?

The young monk

Your Majesty, marriage is not my dharma. Please find another husband for your daughter.

With that, he walked away. But the princess had given him her heart. Determined to marry no one else, she followed him out.

A path through a dense forest towards a patch of light, with the princess alone on it
The sage

Come, Your Majesty. Let us follow them and see what happens.

The trail led into a dense forest. There the monk suddenly vanished, and the princess was left all alone.

The king and the sage found the frightened princess, comforted her, and set off to take her home to her father.

A winter night: three travellers shivering at a village square

A cold night

By the time they left the forest, night had fallen. It was a dark winter night. Lost, the three of them sat down at a village square.

Many people walked past, but no one even asked after the shivering travellers.

A farmer's hut at night; through the open door, people sit around a small fire

Then a farmer came by in his cart, returning from the fields with his wife and children. He saw the three of them shivering and stopped.

किसानThe farmer

Honoured guests, if you wish, please spend the night at my home.

There was little grain in the house that day. Still, the farmer and his wife gave their own share of food to the guests, and went to sleep hungry themselves.

In the morning they returned the princess to her father, and the king and the sage set off for home. On the way, the sage said:

The sage

Did you see, Your Majesty? That monk felt no pull at all for the kingdom, its riches or the princess. He kept to his dharma, and so he is great.

And that farmer and his wife did not think of themselves; they put their guests first. So they are every bit as great.

So who is greater?

The monk

  • Refused a kingdom
  • Refused the princess
  • His duty: renunciation

The farmer's family

  • Gave away their food
  • Slept hungry themselves
  • Their duty: serving guests

Equally great, because each of them kept to their own duty.

And so the sage proved his point.

What the story tells us

In any land, any age and any situation, the person who does their duty is the great one, whether a householder or a monk.

Greatness does not come from a title or a robe. A mother, a farmer, a teacher, a soldier or a monk: whoever does their part wholeheartedly is great.
