Long ago there lived a rich merchant. He spoke little, and the whole town knew him as a miser.
One afternoon he came home from work for lunch, and his wife served the food. Just then, a fly landed on his plate.
The merchant brushed the fly away and went on eating the same food.
His new daughter-in-law saw it all. She was already embarrassed by her father-in-law's stingy name in town, and this made her feel even worse.
She went to her room and spoke to no one. When her mother-in-law asked what was wrong, she said:
Mother, I have a terrible headache.
Soon the whole house knew. The merchant said to his wife:
Ask her: did she ever have a headache like this at her parents' home?
The daughter-in-law was angry inside. Hiding it, she gave an answer she was sure would embarrass her miserly father-in-law:
Yes, I did. Then I ground a pearl into a paste and put it on my forehead, and the pain went away.
When the merchant heard this, he handed his wife a pouch full of pearls.
Give this to our daughter-in-law. Let her use as many as she wants.
The daughter-in-law was astonished when she saw the pouch.
She could not hold back her curiosity and went straight to her father-in-law.
I saw you brush a fly off your food and eat it anyway. Everyone calls you a miser. So how can you give me a whole pouch of precious pearls, just to crush and throw away?
My daughter, there is one way to earn money and another way to spend it. What you saw that day was how we earned it.
But when it comes to the ones we love, we should spend accordingly.
The daughter-in-law understood her mistake, and she asked his forgiveness.
Miser or rich?
When earning
- Brushed off the fly
- Wasted not a bite
For loved ones
- A whole pouch of pearls
- Given without counting
Not a miser, but wise: thrift and generosity, each in its place.
What the story tells us
We often judge people from a single moment. The daughter-in-law saw one side of her father-in-law and formed her whole opinion.
Restraint in small things and an open hand for loved ones are not opposites. Often it is the one who knows how to save who can give when it matters.
Think about it
Where do you save, and where do you spend without a second thought? Is that the right split?
