A glorious king once held a feast for Brahmins in his palace garden. The cook was preparing the food right there, in the open.
Just then an eagle came flying across the sky, with a snake in its grip.
As they passed over the garden, the snake tried to bite the eagle to save itself. A few drops of its venom fell straight into the pot where the food was cooking.
The cook had not the slightest idea. That same food was served to the Brahmins.
The food had turned poisonous, and every Brahmin who ate it died. So many deaths at once: it was a grave sin.
Who should pay?
A sin had been done, but no one had done it knowingly. Now God faced a question: who should bear its fruit?
The king? He had held the feast, but he had no idea there was poison in the food. The cook? He did not know either.
The eagle, which was only carrying the snake away? Or the snake, which let out its venom to save its own life?
No answer came. Many days passed, and the judgement stayed undecided.
Then one day a few Brahmins came to that city. On the way, they asked a woman for directions to the palace. She showed them the way, then lowered her voice:
But be careful! This king mixes poison into the food of Brahmins.
The moment she said this, God spoke:
I have found the one. The fruit of this deed will go to this woman.
But she was not even there! She did not add the poison, cook the food or serve it. Why should she be punished?
Whoever takes the most pleasure in a deed must also bear its fruit.
Neither the king nor the cook, nor the eagle nor the snake took any pleasure in it. But this woman has enjoyed it more than anyone. So she must bear its fruit.

What the story tells us
Karma is not only what we do with our hands. What we say, and what we think and feel about others, is our karma too.
It is easy to pass on someone's mistake, or a rumour, with relish. But the fruit of that relish lands in our own account.
Whatever we give to the world is what comes back to us.
Think about it
When did you last pass on something bad about someone? Did you actually know it was true?
