An empty throne in a dark hall, with a jackal hanging above it by its tail

The first dream

Long ago, a king had a strange dream. Above his golden throne, a jackal hung upside down from the ceiling by its tail, snarling and snapping.

None of his ministers or scholars could explain it. So the king called everyone in the kingdom to the palace: surely someone could read the dream.

A snake coiled on the road in a mountain pass, and a traveller approaching

A farmer from the northern hills set out too. In a narrow pass, a snake lay coiled on the road.

साँपThe snake

Stop, traveller. I know what the dream means. I will tell you, but half the reward is mine.

किसानThe farmer

I promise. Half is yours.

A king on his throne in a pillared court, with a man standing before him

The snake whispered the meaning in his ear. A huge crowd stood before the palace, but no one could answer. Then the farmer stepped forward:

किसानThe farmer

Your Majesty, these are times of cunning and deceit. No one can be trusted. Your kingdom has become a den of jackals.

The king nodded with a smile and gave him two bags of gold.

But on the way home, the farmer avoided the pass. He took the long way round and kept all the gold for himself.

A gleaming sword hanging by a hair above an empty throne

The second dream

Time passed. The king dreamed again: above his throne, a sharp, flashing sword hung by a single hair.

The king sent for the same farmer. With a heavy heart, he went back to the pass.

साँपThe snake

I know the king has dreamed again. I will tell you the meaning, but this time, truly share half.

किसानThe farmer

This time, I truly promise.

किसानThe farmer

Your Majesty, these are times of anger and war. Your enemies are preparing for battle. Your kingdom bristles with drawn swords.

The king gave him four bags of gold and made ready for battle.

This time the farmer came back through the pass. But when he saw the snake waiting on the road, anger took hold of him. He drew his knife:

किसानThe farmer

All you'll get is stone and ash!

He chased the snake and cut off its tail. And again he kept all the gold.

A pot brimming with grain hanging above an empty throne

The third dream

Time passed again. The king had a third dream: above his throne hung a pot brimming with grain, spilling over the rim.

Again the farmer was summoned. This time he set his pride aside, went to the pass and called out:

किसानThe farmer

Snake, forgive me. The king has dreamed again.

साँपThe snake

I will tell you the meaning, if this time you swear to share half.

किसानThe farmer

I swear it. Half is yours.

Ripe wheat in golden light
किसानThe farmer

Your Majesty, these are times of ease and generosity. Every home has grain, every stomach is full. Your kingdom gives peace and plenty to all.

The king gave him six bags of gold, and the farmer went straight back to the pass.

किसानThe farmer

Snake, all six bags are yours; that is half of everything I have won. I have no words for my shame at how I treated you.

The mountain pass where the snake disappeared into the rocks
साँपThe snake

Traveller, I hold nothing against you; you are like everyone else. When the kingdom was full of deceit, you deceived too. When anger was everywhere, you too raised your knife.

साँपThe snake

And now, when there is plenty everywhere, you too have turned generous. You simply changed with the times. What use is gold to an old snake like me? Keep it, and go in peace.

The snake slipped into a crack in the rock and was gone. The farmer lifted the bags onto his shoulders and walked on, but somehow, the gold felt very heavy now.

As the times, so the farmer

The farmer broke his word too
The farmer struck out too
The farmer turned generous too

As the times changed, so did the farmer. But a promise is not kept according to the weather.

In the Ramcharitmanas, King Dasharatha says:

This has ever been the way of Raghu's line: let life go, but never one's word.

Raghukul rīti sadā chali āī, prān jāhũ baru bachanu na jāī.

The family of Raghu has always lived by this: one may lose one's life, but never break one's word.

What the story tells us

The farmer was not a bad man; he simply bent with the wind. When deceit was all around, he deceived; when anger was all around, he struck; when good times came, he was generous.

True character does not change with the times. Being good in good times is easy; keeping your word in hard times is the real test.

And if we slip, going back like the farmer to apologise and repay what we owe takes courage too.
